Abstract

527,025. Heating aircraft. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 28, 1939, No. 9670. Convention date, May 4, 1938. [Classes 64 (ii) and 64 (iii)] Heat is transmitted from exhaust gases to air which in turn transmits heat to air passing into aircraft cabins. The engine exhaust pipe 8 opens at 10 into the air, and air entering at 12 passes through a jacket 11, and thence through pipes 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 to outlets 21, 22. Air for heating the cabin enters at 23 and passes through valve 25 to injector nozzle 34, which may draw air from cabin 7 through pipe 35 into space 33 and which delivers it to pipes 26, 27 surrounding pipes 16, 17. Warmed air is delivered into the cabin 7 and also through pipe 32 into the pilot's cabin 5. The inner pipes 16, 17 may be plain, or corrugated as in Fig. 3, and the annular space may be longitudinally divided by partitions 37. Outlet nozzles 28, 30 communicate with the smaller chamber 38, and nozzles 29, 31 with the larger chamber 39. The pipe 13 communicates with the air through valve-controlled pipe 46. The intermediate air may be heated to about 200‹C. by the exhaust gas, and the air entering the cabins may be heated to 35‹C. The injector 33 is employed to circulate air from the cabin when atmospheric temperature is exceptionally low. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 305,627, [Class 64 (ii)].
