Abstract

526,942. Polyamides. TRIGGS, W. W. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Dec. 18, 1938, No. 33621. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyamides exhibiting solubility in lacquer solvents or heat-hardening properties, are obtained by heat treatment of approximately equimolecular quantities of a primary or secondary diamine and a dicarboxylic acid or amide-forming derivative of a dibasic acid, in which the sum of the radical lengths of diamine and dibasic acid ingredient exceeds 8, at least one of the reactants containing an unsaturated linkage of non-benzinold type. Heating is effected in the presence or absence of a solvent to a temperature of 100-300‹C., preferably 150-275 ‹C. The salt first formed may be separated and purified before heating to form the amide. Examples are given of the production of polyamides from decamethylenediamine and (1) fumaric, (2) maleic, (3) acetylene dicarboxylic, and (5) and (6) 1, 2 dihydronaphthylene 1.2-dicarboxylic and 1.4-dihydronaphthylene 1.4-dicarboxylic acids; and (4) from dihydro-muconic and ethylene diamine. Examples of other unsaturated acids and unsaturated diamines are also given. The products are suitable for preparing coating, impregnating, sizing, adhesive and moulding compositions.
