[Class 83 (iv)] In a welding apparatus having an electrode at the end of a carrier, the carrier has at its opposite end a handle in the form of a hand grip a portion of which moves relatively to the carrier whereby pressure is exerted axially of the electrode, the movable portion including an electric switch closed by such movement. A portable apparatus for welding plates 20, 21 comprises electrode: 14, 15 connected by flexible conductors 12, 13 to a trans former 10 suspendec from an overhead track way 11. The electrode 14 is clamped to or held by an operator against the plate 20 anc the electrode 15 is secured in a carrier 25 fixed to a handle 26 through which an, operator presses the electrode 15 manually against the work. The handle comprises a stationary portion 26 fixed by screws to the carrier, and a movable portion 30 pivoted thereto at 31 and provided with a tongue 32 engaging a shoulder 33 on the stationary portion to limit outward movement of the portion 30, which is effected by a spring 45. The spring engages at one end a push button switch 37 connected to the contact circuit of the transformer and contained in an aperture 35 in the stationary portion and at its other end presses a washer 46 against a nut 47 screwed into the hand grip 30 and containing a screwed spindle 55 for operating the push button 56. The tension of the spring is varied according to the gauge of the plates by adjusting the nut 47, the washer having an indicating tongue moving along a graduated scale on the hand grip, the scale indicating plates of different thicknesses. The electrode 15 is pushed by hand against the plate by pressure on the hand grip and when a predetermined pressure is obtained the switch 37 is closed to put in the welding current, a timing mechanism being provided to limit the duration of current.
