Abstract

524,941. Preventing premature release of fastenings. CROWE, G. E. W., and COLEMAN, C. J. Feb. 10, 1939, No. 4456. [Class 44] To prevent the unfastening of a lid 2 when the pressure within a vessel 1 is excessive, a spring-controlled piston forming part of the locking mechanism is located within a cylinder mounted on the vessel. The lid is rotated to connect it to the vessel, and for this purpose a handle 7 with a sleeve 5 carrying a toothed pinion 4 to engage teeth 3 on the edge of lid is provided. A pin 6, riveted at one end to the vessel, is secured within the sleeve and handle and is bored to receive the piston 10 ; the latter is grooved longitudinally at 11 and carries a pin 12 which enters a groove 14a in a part 14. When the piston under pressure is moved against a spring 16, the pin 12 engages a longitudinal channel 15 in the sleeve which is then locked against rotation. A second and stronger spring 17 engages the piston when a limiting pressure is reached, and the groove 11 registers with a slot 13 open to the air through a port 17a.
