Abstract

524,793. Parachutes. SWOFFORD, P. J. Feb. 8, 1939, No. 4125. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1938. [Class 4] A parachute comprises a canopy 10, a tubular body 13 carried by and extending above and below the canopy, means 11 and 17 for securing the canopy and body to a harness 12, and longitudinally extending laterally expansible means 22 formed upon the upper end of the body to facilitate the escape of confined air from within the body. A pilot parachute 24 may be connected to the upper end of the body. In the form shown the tubular body has a rounded nose portion 19 with an air exit opening 20. The slots 22 are cut on the bias of the fabric and reinforced by bands sewn on at their edges. Air inlet openings 16 are provided in the body below the canopy. Preferably one-third of the body extends above the canopy and two-thirds below.
