Abstract

524,149. Milling machines and cutters. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2210. Convention date, May 2, 1938. [Class 83 (iii)] In a method of and machine for milling flat surfaces, a frusto-conical cutter, having the inclination of the cone generator to a transverse plane exceeding 10 degrees is placed in line contact with the surface which is fed relatively to the cutter to distribute the cut. In one form the frusto-conical cutter 17 is mounted on a milling-arbor 16 and the work 11 is mounted in a fixture 18 on a table 12 which is traversed to carry the work past the cutter to finish the work surface 10. If the work surface is wider than the length of the cutting-edges 17a, the work is adjusted to bring another part of the surface into contact with the cutter. In a modification, the cutting-edges are inclined to generators of the cutter surface so that the teeth act progressively and give a shearing action. In another modification, the cutter arbor is inclined to the horizontal and the top surface of the work is horizontal. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the cutter spindle 33, driven from change speed gearing, is inclined to a plane perpendicular to the direction of the movement of the work 11.
