Abstract

523,637. Variable-speed gearing. MOSES, R. I. Jan. 11, 1939, No. 958. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gearing comprises a driving shaft 2 carrying a pinion 6 driving a wheel 4 on a driven shaft 1 through a planet gear 11 on a sleeve 7. The motion of the gear 11 about the axis of the shaft 2 is controlled by an eccentric 12 in a block 13 freely slidable vertically in a member 15 pivoted on a pin 16. The swinging motion of the member 15 is controlled by fluid in a cylinder. When the shaft 1 is stationary fluid freely travels from one side of the piston to the other to allow free movement of the member 15 and pinion 11. The maximum rotation of the shaft 1 is effected by locking the carrier 8 of the pinion. The fluid spaces at the two ends of the cylinders are connected by pipes and a throttle valve actuated by hand or automatically.
