Abstract

523,186. Manhole covers. BROAD & CO., Ltd., and ROBINSON, H. E. Feb. 13, 1939, No. 4699. [Class 107] A manhole cover comprises a main apertured plate, a closure plate non-rotatably carried by the main plate, and means operated from within the manhole whereby the closure plate is moved towards or away from the main plate to prevent or allow the passage of gas through the main plate. In the form shown, the cover 10 for a gas-proof air-raid shelter has slots 11 closed from below by a screw-operated circular plate 15 having packing rings 20, 21 bridging the region of the slots to prevent the passage of gas. The plate 15 is adapted for sliding movement on the screw 12 under the control of the nut 16. The cover is supported in the open position by a slotted strut 23 and is locked in closed position by a turn-button 28 operated from either the inside or the outside of the cover.
