520,733. Converting rotary into oscillating motion; valve gear. EVENSON, T. Oct. 28, 1938, No. 31208. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] Consists in means for converting uni - directional rotary motion into oscillating motion, particularly adapted for positive push-pull actuation of high-speed internal - combustion engine poppet valves. A bar 1 is pivoted at its lower end 7 to both a link 2 pivoted at 3 and a link 4 journalled on the pin of a driving crank 5, but the pivots of the links 2, 4 with the bar 1 need not be coincident. Towards its upper end the bar is pivoted at 10 to a link 8 pivoted at 9. The upper end of the bar carries a pin 11 which moves in alternate directions over a substantially semi-elliptical path 12 and engages a slot 13 of a rocker arm 14 actuating a spindle 15 to which valve-rocker levers 16 may be keyed. In order to ensure smooth engagement of the pin 11 with the gap 13 the longer limb 14a of this gap is set-back as at 14b. With this mechanism the usual compression springs 18 may be dispensed with.
