Abstract

519,935. Gas and oil engines. JONES, J., and BALMFORD, A. B. Sept. 7, 1938, Nos. 26131/38, 8789/39, and 23441/39. [Class 7 (ii)] An engine using a compression ratio of 12 - 15 to 1 operates with gas alone, or with a mixture of gas and liquid fuel or with liquid fuel alone, without alteration of the compression ratio. When using gas, ignition is effected by a sparking plug or by injection of oil and the cylinder charge which is supplied from a carburetter or through a mixing valve comprising gas, a main air supply and a regulatable supply of auxiliary air. A governor controls the auxiliary air and the gas supply. The combustion chamber is free from pockets and hot-spots and is adequately cooled and if required the piston and exhaust valves may be cooled.
