Abstract

519,741. Ships. SELDEN, F. H. Sept. 29, 1938, No. 28376. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1937. [Classes 113 (ii) and 114] The stern of a ship is provided with a truncated conical sleeve which extends partly within the hull and outwardly abuts and conforms to the shape of the large propeller boss, such sleeve carrying the bearings for the propeller shaft, the re-action forces from which being transmitted to the hull only by such sleeve. Conical sleeve 3 is welded or otherwise secured to the frames of the hull of the ship and .carries sheet metal footings 14, 17 respectively for bearings 15, 16 in which the propeller shaft 5 is supported. The ends of the sleeve are closed by plates 19; 20 and an access opening also provided which has a cover plate 13. The outer end of the sleeve is in line with the surface 9 of the propeller boss, and carried at the stern is a truncated conical member 10 which fairs up with the propeller boss. This extension cone is hollow and access to the propeller nut 6 is possible through an opening which is normally closed by a cover 12.
