518,981. Agitating apparatus for effecting physical or chemical changes. GROVES, W. W. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 12, 1938, No. 26563. [Class 86] [Also in Groups III, XII and XIII] Apparatus for effecting physical and chemical changes comprises a vessel of approximately circular cross section, rapidly oscillated in the plane of the section, and charged with one or more liquids or a pulverulent solid, the frequency and amplitude of the oscillations and the charge being chosen so as to cause the denser liquid, or solid, to form a sheet-like layer touching the inner surface ; another liquid, or a gas may be passed through the shell so formed and the liquid &c. may be continuously supplied. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 a tubular vessel 13 is mounted on springs 16 and vibrated by a rotating, eccentric weight 15. A liquid is supplied by a pipe 2 and discharges through a pipe 6 and a gas is passed in counter current. Vanes 7, 8 and projections 17 may be provided. Liquids of different densities may be passed in the same direction, or in opposite directions through the vessel which may be of conical, or stepped formation and may be fitted with rotary, oscillating or fixed central cores of cylindrical or other cross section. The shell-like layer is produced in the case of water with the following typical dimensions. The vessel is 40 mm. in diameter and is given elliptical oscillations, the axes of which are 3.5 mm. and 5 mm., at the rate of 1,420 per minute. The vessel is filled to at least 50 per cent. Examples are given of the use of the apparatus for the drying, cleaning or absorption of gases, the reduction of nitraniline with hydrogen, and the preparation of nitropyrene.
