Abstract
515,908. Waterproofing textiles ; estertfication processes. DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE AKT.-GES. June 15, 1938, No., 17840. Convention date, June 15, 1937. [Class 2(ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Fibrous textile materials of animal, vegetable or artificial origin are subjected to surface treatment in a bath containing one or more high molecular fatty or wax acids, e.g., palmitic, stearic or montanic acid, and one or more anhydrides of non-soap-forming organic acids. Suitable anhydrides are those of chloracetic acid, bromacetic acid, cyanacetic acid and benzoic acid, and the mixed anhydride of benzoic acid and aliphatic acid. A solvent such as benzine, carbon tetrachloride or benzene is present, and if desired also small quantities of free acid or organic base, particularly a tertiary amine. The anhydride may also be applied in aqueous emulsion. In an example, artificial silk satin is treated in a bath consisting of a solution of 1 per cent. each of montanic acid and chloracetic anhydride in benzene. In another example, cotton material is treated in a bath containing 10 parts stearic acid, 9 parts bromacetic anhydride and 1 part bromacetic acid in 1,000 parts of benzine.
