Abstract

515,440. Fluid-pressure brakes. OTTAWAY, E. C., WILLETT, S. E., LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD, and CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. June 1, 1938, No. 16420. [Class 103 (i)] In a manually operated selflapping valve for fluid-pressure brakes, that is controlled by a piston subject to brake cylinder pressure opposed to the pressure of a spring that is stressed by the pedal movement, a second spring which reacts on the pedal but not on the piston comes into action after a moderate brake application has been made so as to increase the rate of change of pedal pressure with cylinder pressure. A further spring may come 'into action between the pedal and the piston at about the same time as the second spring. The compressed air supply, brake cylinder and exhaust are connected respectively to ports 2, 3, 4. The supply and exhaust valves 5, 12 are carried by a rod 8, the valve 12 being arranged to seat on a passage 13 through the piston 11 which is subject to brake cylinder pressure through ports 3,24. Movement of the plunger 16 by the pedal and rod 16a moves the piston 11 by the spring 17 to seat the valve 12 and lift the supply valve 5. When the cylinder pressure on the piston 11 is sufficient to overcome the pressure of the spring 17 the piston moves back and the valve 5 closes. When a moderate brake application has been effected, the plunger 16 engages the seating ring 20 of a spring 21 which may be precompressed between that ring and a fixed ring 22, the resistance of this spring being thus added to that of the spring 17 with further pedal movement. When or just before the spring 21 is engaged, the plunger 16 may engage a further spring 26 which abuts on an extension 18 of the piston 11 so that the pedal movement for a given increase of cylinder pressure is reduced during the second stage of brake application. The casing 1 may be fixed or may be connected through a lever to the brakes to enable the brakes to be applied by direct pedal pressure assisted by the fluid pressure.
