Abstract

514,345. Field tube heat - exchangers; air heaters. STEIN & ATKINSON, Ltd. Dec. 8, 1938, Nos. 35874 and 35875. Convention dates, Dec. 22, 1937, and Oct. 27, 1938. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] Apparatus suitable for heating air for metallurgical furnaces comprises groups A, B of Field tubes depending into a flue formed with a baffle 12, the air passing in succession through the inner and outer tubes of the group A and thence through the outer and inner tubes of the group B from a supply duct 1 to a discharge duct 8. The flue gases flow over the groups in a generally counterwise direction to the air. In a modification, the tube group B is screened from the full effect of the hot flue gases by a row of Field tubes 21, Fig. 4, through which a part of the air from the supply duct is directed by a tube 18. In another arrangement, the tube 18 is provided with a valve 26, Fig. 5, having an inlet 27 whereby colder air than that entering the duct 1 may be passed through the screen tubes. Further, the duct 1 may be closed by a valve 28 so that when heated air is not required the tubes may becooled to prevent burning thereof by fluid admitted through the inlet 27.
