Abstract
513,586. High-vacuum apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 11, 1938, No. 7582. Convention date, March 11, 1937. [Class 71] The booster condensation pump of the apparatus is operated by a fluid of a vapour pressure between .05 and 2 X 10<-6> mm. Hg. which is used at a relatively high boiler pressure, above 2.5 mm., and operated against a high back pressure of .3 to 10 mm. The pump is interposed between a fine pump and a backing- pump to produce a vapour pressure less than 2 x 10<-6> mm. The fluid used in the booster or intermediate pump is purified by a fractionating device. A steam ejector may be used as a backing pump. Evacuation to 10<-7> may be obtained with octyl phthalate in the fine pump. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, the part 1 is connected to the chamber to be evacuated and carries a chamber 3 with a flared jet 4 with an electrically-heated boiler 16. The booster pump B has a boiler 5 and a conduit 6 leading to a nozzle 7. The surrounding chamber 9 communicates with the part 1 and with a fluid-cooled condenser 10. A pump 14 returns condensate to the boiler 5. An arrangement of steam ejectors C, D, E is used as a backing-pump. Superheated steam at about 170‹C. is supplied through pipes and valves to the boiler B and ejectors. The pump fluid in B is heated to vaporizing temperature under a boiler pressure considerably in excess of .3 mm. Hg. The gases from conduit 2 are entrained in the jet from nozzle 7 and forced into conduit 15. Dimethyl-phthalate in pump B is heated to give a boiler pressure of between .5 and 10 mm. When the system pressure is below .1 mm., pump A is started. Di-octyl phthalate (apilson oil) is here used. The condensed vapour from jet 4 re-enters the boiler through opening 3. Valve 30 controls the rate of vaporization and temperature in boiler 5. Suitable pump liquids are petroleum distillates having a vapour pressure not greater than .1 mm. at 20‹C. or less than .1 mm. at 160‹C.-dimethyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl phthalates, diglycerol tetrapropionate, tripropionin, tributyrin, triamylin, amyl naphthalene, squalene and the hydrocarbon obtained by the molecular distillation of a fish oil, as described in Specification 501,841, [Group III]. Specification 473,978 also is referred to.
