Abstract

512,843. Axle-boxes for axles of railway vehicles &c. BAKER, W. S. G., and LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD. March 18, 1938, No. 8350. [Class 12 (i)] An axle-box comprises a frame built-up of members 10, 13 and corner pieces 14 welded together and a detachable tubular member 15 fitting within the frame and having a bore to receive the outer race ring of an antifriction bearing. The front cover plate 20 has an angle ring 21, 22, a lubricant filler 31 and a thrust pad stop 30 welded thereto. The back cover comprises a pair of angle rings 23, 26 with an oil retaining plate 33 and closure ring 34. A corrugated ring 32 is fixed to the axle. The end plates are bolted in place. In a modification the corner pieces 14 are replaced by angular plates which support the tube 15, the members 12, 13, in this case not being shaped to correspond with the tube 15. The coverplates may consist of cylindrical members welded to radially disposed plates.
