Abstract

509,507. Uniting metal to ceramic material. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1952. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1937. [Class 36] A vacuum-tight connection between overlapping ceramic and metal parts 1, 5 is formed by providing between the parts a gap stepped to form a narrow lower portion 8 and an enlarged upper portion 7, inserting in the upper portion just sufficient soldering medium 15 to fill the lower portion, assembling the parts together and then heating them to cause the soldering medium to run into the lower portion of the gap. In the construction shown, the ceramic body constitutes an insulator for a lead-in conductor 2 of a mercury vapour discharge vessel, the insulator being carried by a metal tube 6 welded to the vessel 4 and sealed to the ceramic insulator in a manner similar to the metal part 5. The conductor 2 is carried by a cap 3 welded to the metal part 5. To prevent attack of the solder 15 by mercury vapour, seals 9, 10 may be disposed adjacent the solder, the seals consisting either of asbestos, or of vitreous material, such as a mixture of talcum and borax, fused between the metal and ceramic parts.
