508,914. Explosives. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Hercules Powder Co.) July 27, 1938, No. 22379. [Class 9 (ii)] A method of making smokeless powder comprises incorporating in the powder during manufacture thereof a small amount of ground glass, calcium silicide, antimony sulphide, metallic antimony powder, antimony oxide, cadmium carbonate, metallic cadmium, cadmium oxide, metallic cobalt or mixtures of any of the same, capable of preventing rust formation in the gun barrel without increasing the speed of combustion of the powder. Instead of incorporating the rust preventative in the smokeless powder, the latter may be coated therewith. According to an example, 1 per cent of the rust preventative may be incorporated in a powder mix containing 15 per cent nitroglycerine, 0À75 per cent diphenylamine, 1 per cent barium nitrate, and 82À25 per cent nitrocellulose, the mix being colloided by the use of suitable nitrocellulose solvents, pressed through a die, and the strings so formed cut into small grains, dried and surface coated, if desired, to make the powder progressiveburning.
