Abstract

506,972. Hydraulic transmission of power. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 8, 1938, No. 20256. Conventiondate, July 16, 1937. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXI] A master cylinder comprises a return spring so mounted that the mechanical advantage of the operator's foot against it increases as the plunger is depressed thus ensuring that the resistance to the operator's foot does not increase. The spring 59 is coiled round the connecting pivot 53 of two links 49, 43 pivoted to the master cylinder pedal 37 at 47 and a fixed point 41 respectively. The ends of the spring are each hooked round a link. Each link is fixed to one part of the pivot 53 which is in two parts having notch and lug engagement, in order to prevent alignment of the links and locking of the piston in the outermost position. In a modification this is prevented by an extension of the pivot 53 which is adapted to engage the piston 23. The piston 23 is guided in guides 21, 67 and a packing sleeve 77. A check valve 91 allows liquid to be drawn from the reservoir into the cylinder by the suction created on brake release. This liquid is returned through passages in the end of the piston which register with passages 71, 103 in release position. Passages 103, 69 supply fluid to the space behind the piston.
