[Class 130] In mechanism for collecting cigarettes, of the kind in which cigarettes severed from a continuous rod and spaced axially on a conveyer band are moved laterally from the band by a deflecting element, and in which an abutment determines the extent of axial movement of the cigarettes from the cutting mechanism, the axial movement of the cigarettes on the band is continued during their lateral movement until or almost until they engage the abutment. As shown, a rotatable member 23, mounted on a shaft 24 and carrying plates 25 to which bars 26 are secured, delivers the cigarettes laterally from a band 8 on to a collector belt 13. The leading cigarettes are moved laterally by surfaces 27 on the bars 26, whilst the succeeding cigarettes are moved laterally by surfaces 28 on the plates 25. The width of the band 8 is such that the cigarettes are supported by it whilst being moved laterally until they engage abutments which are formed by a stationary plate 29 and by the ends 30 of the bars 26. The cigarettes rebound towards stops 18, 20. To arrest any upward movement imparted to the cigarettes, hanging pieces of felt 21 may be provided above the belt 13.
