Abstract
504,191. Tempering glass. ARON, H. (Ferre & Cie, Ing. F.) Oct. 20, 1937, No. 28608. [Class 56] An apparatus for tempering glass sheets is provided with air distributers in the form of corrugated plates having air jets disposed along the ridges of the corrugations, the furrows between the ridges allowing the air to escape after impinging on the hot glass. Means are provided for reciprocating the distributers in open curvilinear paths, and for turning on the air automatically as soon as a glass sheet is in position between the distributers. The glass sheet 16, Fig. 1, is heated in a furnace 13 and is lowered through an opening 24 into the cooling device. This consists of two corrugated plates 26, 27 which slide on horizontal guide rods 30 and are reciprocated by a crank 43, Fig. 3, rotated by a motor 50. The plates 26, 27 are connected by tapered trunks 105 with blowing-fans 101, bellows 58 being interposed between the plates and the trunks to permit the reciprocations of the plates. - Each of the plates has a deeply corrugated surface comprising ridges 40. The crests of the ridges are provided with slits which direct fan-shaped jets of air on to the glass sheet, the slits being so arranged that the air jets impinge on the glass at an angle of 70‹ to its surface. The furrows between the ridges allow the escape of air which has been heated by the glass, and this may be facilitated by making the furrows 257. Fig. 10, shallower at the middle than at the edges. The air jets may also be formed by short tubes fitted to apertures in the ridges. In a modified construction, the distributers 26, 27 may slide in horizontal slides 180, Fig. 8, which are supported on the straps 82 of rotating eccentrics. The rotation of the eccentrics and of the crank 43 are so timed that each air jet moves in an open curvilinear path. The fans 101 are provided with inlet trunks 63, Fig. 3, fitted with butterfly valves, and these valves are connected with one another by a shaft 64 and are opened by the suction of the fans against the action of springs. Normally, the valves are locked in the closed position by latches, but the latches are opened, when a glass sheet is lowered between the distributers, by a bar 18 from which the glass is suspended, thus admitting air to the fans.
