Abstract

503,279. Making and closing bags; seaming non-metallic sheet materials. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Bergstein, R. M.) March 22, 1938, No. 8803. [Classes 94 (i) and 94 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In seaming together heat fusible sheet materials, the overlapped portions are put under tension by deflecting a narrow zone thereof while they are supported adjacent the zone, heat being applied while they are so tensioned. In reference to bag making, a web 17 of thermoplastically coated material, or material so coated only at 17a, is tubed at 37, the longitudinal seam being formed by a heated shoe 39 which deflects the overlapped edges into a groove 38 but does not bottom them therein. The bag bottoms 36 are formed, in similar fashion, by a rotary pair 46, 47, bags being secured at 20. In a modification, the tubular bag blanks may be severed from the tube, the bottoms being formed, during transverse motion of the blanks, by a shoe and groove device similar to 39, 38. Filled bags may be sealed by passing them between a similar groove and shoe device. Specification 475,301 is referred to:
