Abstract
502,756. Refining iron. SOC. DES ACIERIES DE LONGWY, and QUINCY, L. Dec. 15, 1937, No. 34697. Convention date, Nov. 22. [Class 72] [Also in Group XXII] Substances which favour the production of graphite, such as silicon, nickel, aluminium, or titanium, are introduced into the still molten centre of a cast pig-iron roll in the form of a number of independent charges contained in a set of superposed metallic cases 9, Fig. 3, held in the mould by a rod 11 or other connector instead of being merely introduced' in a tube or unenclosed. The rod 11 may extend centrally through the cover 13 and have a handle whereby it can be rotated and moved vertically or it may be mounted eccentrically in a slotted arm 17 connected to a handle 18. The cases 9 melt to discharge their contents but they may have sleeves 10, Fig. 4, and separating discs 19 of steel which do not melt but are used for stirring the centre mass and are then withdrawn, with the rod 11, before the centre solidifies.
