Abstract

491,341. Casting. METAL CARBIDES CORPORATION. July 7, 1937, No. 18905. Convention date, July 15, 1936. [Class 83 (i)] For controlling the cooling of molten metal introduced into a mould solid particles of metal are introduced thereinto during the pouring operation. In a process of continuous casting the molten metal and solid particles are simultaneously fed and may form a sheath between which the molten metal is fed. The solid particles may be in the form of a mesh. As shown in Fig. 1 powdered metal 20 from a hopper 21 is fed to the mould 33 simultaneously with the molten metal 10 from a crucible or ladle 11. In Fig. 3 is shown a continuous feed of solid particles 20 from hoppers 55 with molten material 10a therebetween, belts 50 forming conveyers. Arcuate magnets 53 cooperate with the belts to prevent the particles falling off the belts as the latter pass around the pulleys. The product 15 is suitable for further working. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification in which metal in the form of a mesh is fed by belts either instead of or in addition to solid particles. The accumulation of solid metal on the sides and bottom of a pouring vessel is shown as also a cast metal product. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
