1343198 Subaqueous structures COMBINATIE WESTERSCHELDE VOf 28 June 1971 [26 June 1970] 30219/71 Heading E1H An underwater structural element, e.g. a tunnel element 4, is provided with a sand foundation layer by the injection of a sand/ water suspension from a floating suction dredger (not shown) through pipes 10b, 10 and nozzles 11 into the space beneath the element. A crater 14 is stated to be initially formed by the creation of a sand dyke 13 between the bottom 3 and the element 4, the suspension supplied to crater 14 eventually flowing out of it to fill the whole of the space below and possibly alongside the element, and displacing unwanted silt 40 before it as it does so. The element 4 which has already been coupled to a previously laid element may be supported on adjustable temporary supports 6 during this process. Correct positioning of the adjacent elements may be ensured by controlling the pressure and/or the sand content of the injected suspension, or by varying the ballasting of the sunken elements as the sand foundation is being laid. Pressure detectors may be provided on the bottom of the element. The injected suspension may cause some lifting of the element. Once the foundation has been laid, nozzles 11 and adjacent zones 37 are filled with cement mortar.
