Abstract

501,423. Exhaust systems. UMPLEBY, F. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 1946/39. Divided out of 502,727. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust gases flow through a tapering pipe 28 to a divergent nozzle 33 which discharges a jet of gas across the exhaust path in the general direction of flow, the pipe 28 having perforated walls 29a for the exit of the gases, which is preferably through perforated walls of pipes 29 leading to further pipes 32, the pipe 28 taking the form of a figure-of-eight as shown. The return surge of exhaust gases is thus prevented or delayed, and the charging and scavenging of the cylinders is facilitated. The pipe 28 is connected to the main exhaust system, which comprises an exhaust-driven turbo-blower, by manually-operated valves.
