[Class 66 (i)] A door closer comprises a cylinder 10 in which a dashpot piston 14 is movable by a transverse spindle 24 through rack and pinion 17, 23, the spindle being similarly formed at both ends to mount'a door lever 30, so that the closer may be used for right or left-hand doors. The piston is rigid with a disc 16 which abuts on one or more door-closing springs 34, 35, and carries a valve 21 for the passage of fluid during the opening of the door. During the closing of the door the valve seats and the fluid escapes from one side of the piston to the other through a controlled passage 36.. 38 in the cylinder wall.
