Abstract
499,721. Metal - vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 9, 1938, No. 17188. Convention date, June 9, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A device for producing X-rays in great quantity for short periods comprise a mercury or other cathode liquid at the operating temperature and means capable of supplying current to the device at a greater rate than it can be transmitted by the cathode during the initial discharge period, thus producing a high potential drop between the cathode and anode. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which a condenser 17 can be charged to a high potential and is discharged through the tube 10 when the starting-electrode 22 in the latter is activated by the condenser 23 and switch 27. The tube 10 is provided with a mercury pool cathode 14, which is preferably cooled to or below 0‹ C. by a coil 35, and a tungsten anode 11 on a molybdenum lead 12. The starting-electrode 22 may be replaced by a spark gap in series with the condenser 17 and tube 10, or the starting-electrode and spark gap may be combined. Fig. 6 shows a tube in which the cap 56 through which the anode lead passes is screened from the cathode by a cylinder 62 forming part of the lead. A shield 68 is interposed between the starting-electrode and the anode. To prevent darkening of that part of the tube through which X-rays pass by sputtering from the anode, the tube is formed with an extension 71 with a window 70 for the rays at the end of it.
