Abstract

Hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof are freed from weakly acid-reacting organic compounds by extraction with an aqueous alkaline solution in the presence of an auxiliary solvent consisting of amino-alkylamines or alkylolamines in which the alkyl group contains less than 4 carbon atoms. Alkaline substances used are, alkali metal or alkaline earth hydroxides, quaternary ammonium compounds, or alkali carbonates or bicarbonates. Amines specified are, mono-di-and tri-ethanolamines, monodi- and tri-propanolamines, di- and tri-amino ethylamines and 1,2 di-amino-propylamine. Aqueous alkali solutions containing from 15 to 85 per cent of auxiliary agents are used. Liquids treated are, petroleum, benzene, toluene, xylene; chlorinated hydrocarbonssuch as chlorethane, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorpropane, chlorbutylene, chlorbenzene; brombenzene; nitro-hydrocarbons, such as nitroethane, nitrobenzene; or amines such as amylamine aniline, pyridine and petroleum bases. The organic acid-reacting substances removed consist of mercaptans, phenols, naphthenic acids, and fatty acids. The process may be used for desulphurizing petroleum oils. The extraction may be effected by a batch or countercurrent treatment. The purified liquid is then washed with water to remove any auxiliary liquid. The spent alkali solution and washings are worked up for the recovery of auxiliary liquid by solvent extraction, steaming or distillation under reduced pressure. Specification 469,573 is referred to.ALSO:Hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof are freed from weakly acid-reacting organic compounds by extraction with an aqueous alkaline solution in the presence of an auxiliary solvent consisting of amino-alkylamines or alkylolamines in which the alkyl group contains less than 4 carbon atoms.
