Abstract

<PICT:0472342/III/1> Materials are cleaned in the presence of a water-emulsion of a soap or soap-like compound by treatment with a water-insoluble volatile organic solvent in the presence of an addition agent having an appreciable vapour pressure at the boiling point of the solvent and soluble therein but having at most a slight solubility in water, the said agent having the property of facilitating the dispersion of the said water-emulsion in the solvent. The process is applicable to the cleaning of machined metal parts which have been lubricated with aqueous emulsions. As solvents there may be used chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene; and as addition agents one or more hydrogenated p cyclic hydrocarbons or hydrogenated phenols, e.g. cyclohexanol, methyl cyclohexanol, tetrahydronaphthalene. The materials may be immersed in boiling solvent and then in the solvent vapour, for instance in apparatus described in Specifications 391,454 and 400,997. As shown in the Figure, articles to be cleaned, such as machined screws, are put into the part L and solvent and addition agent into the parts L and L<1> of the apparatus. Owing to the presence of the soap on the machined articles and the additive agent in the solvent, the water on the articles is dispersed in the solvent. On heating, water, solvent, and addition agent are vapourized, condensed by the coil C and run into the separator S. In the absence of any soap, the water separates. Solvent and addition agent return to the bottom of L, liquid, dirt, and soap being displaced over the weir into L<1>.
