Abstract

499,275. Centrifugal separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. June 10, 1938, No. 17267. Convention date, June 15, 1937. [Class 23] A centrifugal bowl with a peripheral outlet for the intermittent discharge of sludge is provided with a throttling opening through which the sludge passes before it reaches the outlet. Tightening rings 7, 8 of non-corrosive material, such as stainless steel are provided at the outlet, and the lower wall 5 of the bowl which carries the ring 7 can be lowered periodically for the discharge of sludge. Annular projections 12, 13 are provided on the bowl parts 5, 6, and when the peripheral outlet is opened these projections form a throttling opening through which the sludge discharges in the form of a disc shaped jet 14, Fig. 2. This jet is contracted in thickness and passes between the rings 7, 8. The projections 12, 13 may be of different radii so that they overlap when the outlet is closed. In a modification the peripheral outlet is bounded by an elastic ring in the upper part of the bowl engaged and compressed by a ring on the lower part. In a further modification the projections 12, 13 form an inclined channel which directs the disc jet at a part of one of the tightening rings 7, 8. Where the sludge is discharged through radially moving valves, as in the form shown in Fig. 6, the rings 7, 8 are arranged on the valve head and the casing respectively, and the protecting projections 12, 13 are arranged similarly but farther from the valve axis.
