Abstract

497,108. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., NELSON, E. H., and PIRANI, M. July 27, 1937, No. 20743. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A starting electrode for a discharge device comprises a mass of material of high resistivity that is having a resistivity of not less than 1000 ohms per centimetre cube connected to a distant electride by a good conductor which may be either inside or outside the envelope of the valve. To prevent pitting part of the electrode where the discharge impinges may be coated with a better conductor. The electrode may be in the form of a ball which lies adjacent a main electrode and is connected to the distant electrode by a metal wire external to the valve, the stalk and adjacent half of the ball being coated with a vitreous material having the same thermal expansion as the envelope through which the stalk is sealed by fusing. Details of suitable materials for the high resistance body are given in the Specification and in Specification 497,107, [Group V]. Specification 388,302 also is referred to.
