Abstract

496,299. Hydraulic power transmitters. KLEIN, SCHANZLIN, & BECKER AKT.-GES. June 25, 1937, No. 17789. Convention date, June 25, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A power-transmitting device including a hydraulic torque converter of the F÷ttinger type wherein for the production of intensified torque at starting a guide wheel or reaction member is permitted backward rotation in relation to the turbine wheel, a mechanical train of gears being provided for transmitting this backward rotation to a turbine driven shaft of the device as a rotation in the same direction as that of the said turbine driven shaft, is characterized in that a mechanical change speed gear on the output side of the converter includes some of the said train of gears, means being provided for selecting or bringing into play the required gears. The reaction member, Fig. 2, of the converter is carried by a sleeve 15 connected through a free-wheel 17 with a brake drum 19 an extension 21 of which carries a gear-wheel 20 meshing with an idler pinion 23 in turn meshing with a gear-wheel 24 connected through a free-wheel 26 with a gear-wheel 31 in constant mesh with a gear-wheel 29 on the turbine shaft 14. A freewheel 16 is provided between the reactionmember sleeve 15 and the turbine shaft 14. To obtain intensified torque, the brake drum 19 is released, allowing the reaction member to rotate backwardly, thus driving the gear-wheel 31 backwardly, this backward rotation being compounded with the forward rotation of the turbine driven gear-wheel 29. For ordinary torque conversion, brake drum 19 is held, preventing backward rotation of the reaction member; the gear train 20, 23, 24 is then stationary, the free-wheel 26 permitting rotation of gear-wheel 31 caused by its engagement with gear-wheel 29. Under suitable conditions, the reaction member rotates forwardly, this being permitted by the free-wheel 17, and eventually couples with the turbine shaft 14 through the free-wheel 16, giving coupling drive. The gear-box gives a direct drive top forward speed and a geared - down forward and reverse. For top forward speed, the gear-wheel 29 is coupled by a friction clutch 30 to the output shaft 35. For geared-down forward, clutch 30 is disengaged, and the gear-wheel 31 is coupled by a friction clutch 28 to a lay-shaft 27, and a gear-wheel 33 on the output shaft 35 is slid into engagement with a gear-wheel 32 on said lay-shaft 27. For geared-down reverse, an idler 34 is slid into engagement with both the gear-wheels 32, 33. The constant mesh gearwheels 29, 31 may be provided with different numbers of teeth, so as to obtain differential amounts of " intensification " of torque by the backwardly rotating reaction member, the torque intensification being greater for one speed than for another speed. In a modification, Fig. 3, the free-wheels between the reaction member sleeve and the turbine shaft and between the reaction member sleeve and the brake drum are replaced by a double dog clutch having a coupling sleeve 40 displaceable axially along a thread 39 on the reaction member sleeve 38 ; the output shaft 50 is not coaxial with the turbine shaft.
