Abstract

495,636. De-inking waste paper &c. PARTINGTON, E. H., BECKER, D. R. S., and PORRITT, W. H. Feb. 10, 1937, Nos. 4027 and 27638. [Class 96] Clean pulp is pro. duced from printed or pigmented waste paper, paper board, &c. by steeping, e.g, in caustic soda solu. tion at 160-200‹ F. and agitating so as tc set up opposed conflicting liquid streams of sufficient intensity to cause fragments in one stream to engage frictionally with those of the other and thus separate the fragments into discrete fibres freed from ink and filler which are subsequently washed out. If the waste paper contains little or no loading, china clay &c. may be added to assist in washing out the ink. The opposed streams may be produced by two propellers f, g on a shaft e, one g which circulates the pulp as shown, and the other f is so positioned and dimensioned as to produce by centrifugal effect the conflicting stream adjacent an inlet b which may be offset with respect to the propeller axis. In alternative forms a single propeller is used, and opposing streams produced with baffles. Specification 262,270, [Class 96], is referred to.
