Abstract

495,603. Vehicle luggage carriers ; number-plates. JONES, L. C. Dec. 16, 1937, No. 34867. [Class 103 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A vehicle rear luggage boot 1 is provided with an opening in the back normally closed by a hinged cover and a luggage grid is so mounted on the body or frame or on the cover that the cover can be opened to gain access to the boot both when the grid is in the outof-use and in-use positions, the grid in the out-of-use position resting against or close to the cover and being movable with it. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, the grid 6 and cover 2 are mounted on common pivots 7 and the cover is recessed to form a box 4, closed by a lid 5, in which the grid is normally housed. When the grid is required for use, the lid 5 is opened, the grid moved to the dotted position and the lid reclosed, the cover then being movable if desired to gain access to the boot. In a simplified construction the lid 5 may be omitted or the cover 2 formed with a flat surface following the contour of the boot. The grid may be foldable but, as shown, is of rigid construction comprising cross members united by side bars 16 having portions 15 which complete the contour of the boot when the grid is out-of-use and pass through slots 27 when the grid is moved to the in-use position. The rear number-plate 8, rear lamp 9, stop light 10 and any other warning lights or signs are mounted on a plate 11 hinged to the grid and movable into a recess 12 when the grid is outof-use, a window 13 being provided in the lid 5 to enable them to be viewed in this position. The boot is provided with an upper hinged lid 3. In a modification the bottom 17 of the box 4 is omitted, the cover 2 being formed as a frame. In another construction, the lid 5 is hinged to the lower end of the box and the grid 6 to the upper end, suitable brackets being provided to support it rigidly in .position. In another construction the lid 5 is recessed to form the box. A compartment for the spare wheel, tools &c. may be provided below the boot 1. Specification 434,510 is referred to.
