Abstract

494,739. Aircraft with rotary-wing systems. CIERVA AUTOGIRO CO., Ltd., and BENNETT, J. A. J. April 30, 1937, Nos.28664/38, (divided out of 494,427), and 30588/37. [Class 4] In rotary-wing aircraft in which the rotorblades are articulated to the hub for leading and lagging displacements, a central friction damper 45 is provided and comprises frictional elements connected to the several blades, the friction surfaces operative to damp unsymmetrical leading and lagging of the rotor-blades having a greater total contact area or are subjected to a greater pressure than the frictional surfaces, if any, operative to damp symmetrical leading and lagging motions of the blades. As shown, the damper is embodied in a rotor-head similar to that described in Specification 494,427. The damper comprises a bottom plate 44, an adjustable top plate 45 from which pressure is communicated to steel rings 4911, 4921 ... through a rubber-ring 47 and a steel disc 48. Nine steel rings are provided and each ring is formed with inwardly directed portions 5111, 5112 ... by which the rings are connected into three groups of three so that the three groups are interleaved so that no two contiguous rings belong to the same group. The middle rings of each group are provided with pairs of externally projecting ball-ends, e.g. 541, which are connected by parallel links to ball-joints carried by doublearmed levers carried by the lead and lag pivots by which the blades are connected to the hub. Specification 420,322 is referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification the damper may comprise a disc for each blade, e.g. three, the two outer discs being adjustably clamped to the inner disc, the central disc being connected to a central sleeve having a flanged foot adjustably clamped to the hub. Specification 452,364 also is referred to.
