Abstract

Paper, cotton and other fabrics formed from natural cellulosic materials are made water-resistant by drying them by heat and vacuum in contact with rosin, whereby the fibres are coated with cellulose rosinate. The rosin may be applied in solution or suspension. Suitable solutions in alcohol or trichlorethylene contain 2 to 20 parts of rosin in 100 parts of solvent. The solvent is removed before the vacuum treatment. The rosin may be incorporated in paper during manufacture, e.g. in the beater, to the extent of 5-7 per cent. Drying under vacuum may occupy 20 to 50 hours at a temperature of about 120 DEG C. the final pressure being not greater than 1 mm. of mercury. The material may be treated in roll form or passed continuously through a drying oven.
