Abstract

For obtaining cellulose suitable for good quality paper from wood, straw, and other vegetable materials, nitric acid of 2-10 per cent strength is allowed to act upon the chopped and cleaned raw material for 4-12 hours at room temperature, the material is removed from the acid and drained and then after freeing it from about half the remaining adherent acid by centrifuging or pressing, is heated with stirring in a vessel preventing ingress of air, but at atmospheric pressure and at 60-100 DEG C. for 1-3 hours. Finally the material is washed, treated with hot alkaline liquid, e.g. 2 per cent soda solution for 2 hours and bleached. The heating with acid is performed in a closed steel vessel provided with a sensitive valve which prevents ingress of air and raising of the internal pressure above that of the atmosphere. The acid remaining in the material increases in concentration during the heat treatment, and by restricting the amount of water for the first washing, and then centrifuging, the centrifuged liquid may be re-used if desired after addition of concentrated nitric acid. The initial impregnation may be performed in two stages, first with acid of 2-4 per cent strength and then with acid of 5-10 per cent strength.
