Abstract

An anode material for lamps in which the light is emitted from an anode subjected to a modulated electron bombardment is of a cellular structure with walls less than 1/100 mm. thick, reproducing the structure of some animal or vegetable substance in material which does not volatilize or melt easily in a vacuum. For example, elder pith is boiled in a solution of sodium tungstate and the tungsten precipitated as oxide. The material is then carbonized and the carbon removed by heating in a stream of hydrogen or hydrocarbons which also convert the oxide to metal, or carbide. The cell walls may be thinned in this way before the refractory substance is added. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also states that the carbonized and reduced organic structure may be employed without the addition of a refractory material and that the metallic material may be deposited from a vapour, e.g. tungsten chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
