Abstract

492,591. Trueing grinding wheels. HORSTMANN, S. A., and HORSTMAN, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1937, Nos. 5212 and 18746. [Classes 60 and 124] A grinding-wheel for use in grinding screwthreads and provided with a number of grooves corresponding to the shape of the thread is formed or dressed by means of a roller having thereon a screw thread of the form desired on the work, the roller being rotated and traversed across the wheel in accordance with the pitch of the thread. The grinding wheel 14 is driven at a peripheral speed approximately the same as that of the forming roller 10. which may be mounted on a lead screw in a quill 11., so arranged that the roller takes the place of the work piece to be ground, or the roller may be mounted as shown at 10<1> on a separate spindle 11<1>; in this case, to avoid inaccuracy due to differences in the lead screws, the wheel 14, formed by an accurate roller on the workcarrying screw, is used to form a roller mounted at 10<1>, this latter roller then being used in subsequent forming operations. The roller may be grooved at 16 to prevent interference due to grit lodging in the thread. Internal grinding wheels also may be formed by the method described above. In a modification, the grooves in the wheel are formed roughly by a diamond tool 20 mounted on a head 22 rotated and traversed, in accordance with the pitch of the grooves, past the wheel, which is rotated at high speed ; the head 22 may be rotated rapidly whilst the diamond is out of contact with the wheel. The roughly formed thread is finished by a roller, as described above, or the roller may be freely mounted on a mandrel, being rotated and traversed by its engagement with the wheel. Specifications 417,771 and 492,592 are referred to.
