Abstract

492,410. Packeting - machines. STONE, A. A., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 15, 1937, Nos. 16555, 16556, 16557, and 16558. [Class 94 (i)] Collapsed tubular shells of rectangular crosssection are partially opened, and are then further opened so that the acute angles become obtuse and vice versa and recollapsed in the opposite direction to weaken the creases, so that the shell springs back to a rectangular cross-section when released. A collapsed shell is shown in Fig. 6 and comprises two broad sides 12, 13, two narrow sides 14, 15 and a narrow panel 20 adhering to the side 12 to form a longitudinal seam. In this form the shells are fed longitudinally between two pairs of rollers 24, 25, 26, Fig. 4, so that the raised portions 24 engage the ends 14, 15 and the guide rollers 25 press portions of the broad sides towards cylindrical surfaces 26. This results in the shell assuming the cross-section shown in Fig. 7. A member 27 locates the shell peripherally on the rollers, and continues to move it to a position on a support 30 in the path of a plunger 31 which' moves the partially opened shell to the left so that the side 15 engages a guide 40 pivoted at 41, the corner 18 striking an abutment 42. Combined movement of the plunger exerts diagonal pressure between the points 16, 18, and further opens the shell. The guide 40 is now moved in a clockwise direction about its pivot so as to co-operate with the plunger to cause the shell to have the cross-section shown in Fig. 9. The acute angle at the corner 18 has now become obtuse and the obtuse angle at 17 has become acute. The plunger is formed with two faces, the face 31a engages the corner 16 in the first portion of its stroke, and subsequently the face 31b engages the corner 17. The shell is now moved between rollers 51, 52 which completely collapse it, and, upon release, the resiliency of the material causes it to spring back into a rectangular formation.
