Abstract
In a process for production of cellulose by the decomposition of straw or similar grasses with soda lye in a rotary boiler, the fibrous material is saturated with the minimum of decomposing liquid only a small excess just sufficient to cover the bottom of the boiler being allowed, air is driven out by steam and the charge is steamed with dry steam without increasing its moisture content. 20 kgms. of chaff from corn straws were placed in a 200 litre tumbler boiler. 60 litres of water with 2 kgms. of NaOH and 100 grams of sulphite or hydrosulphite or weak waste lye of corresponding concentration are added. The boiler is closed and rotated for 1/4 hour. Dry superheated steam is then supplied. The boiler valves are then closed, the boiler rotated, the exhaust valve opened and fresh steam blown through for 5-10 minutes. This is repeated 2 or 3 times for complete removal of air. Steaming then takes place with dry superheated steam for 1 1/2 hours at about 5 atm. The temperature is 140-175 DEG C. The material is then blown out, washed, and again treated with a lye containing 100 grams of sulphite and 1 1/2 kgms. of NaOH to 10 litres of water, and again steamed for 1 1/2 hours. The steam is then blown out, 20 litres of fresh water added and the material washed free from alkali. In place of 2 stages, the material may be treated once for 2-2 1/2 hours with a lye containing 5 kgms. of NaOH to 60 litres of water. The yield amounts to 50-55 per cent.
