Abstract
491,089. Vehicle brake operating mechanism. EVERNDEN, H. I. F., and MITCHELL, A. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5867. [Class 103 (i)] Operating mechanism for the brakes of an automobile independently sprung wheel that is carried by links, leaf springs or the like extending from the chassis and in which the brake expander moves normally to the plane of the brake drum comprises two levers mounted respectively on the wheel assembly and on the chassis and connected the one to the expander and the other to the pedal &c., the levers being connected by a link of such a length and so positioned that movement of the expander relatively to the brakes due to the up and down movement of the wheels is substantially prevented. In Fig. 1, the member B which carries the stub axle B<1> of a steering wheel is connected to the chassis by a pair of equal and parallel links A, A<1>. A lever E<2> pivoted to the chassis is connected by a link E<5> to the driver's control and by a link E<3> to a lever E<1> mounted on a boss on the member B. The lever E<1> is connected by a link E<4> to the brake expander D. In this case the link E<3> is equal and parallel to the links A, A<1>. One of the pivots of the link E<4> lies in the axis of the steering pivot B<2>. In a modification, the lever E<1> is mounted on the back plate of the brake and the link E<3> adjacent its connection to this lever is broken by a vertical pivot lying in the axis of the steering pivot. In Fig. 5, link H<2> corresponding to the link E<3>, Fig. 1, is connected to a horizontal lever H mounted on the brake back plate C<1> by a pivot H<5> which lies in the axis of the steering pivot, the link being broken by a horizontal pivot H<4>. If the wheel carrying links A are of unequal length and initially parallel, the link connecting the two levers is arranged parallel to the wheel carrying links with its ends lying respectively in the planes containing the inner and outer fulcrums of the wheel carrying links. Where the wheel carrying links are not initially parallel or where leaf springs are employed the length of the link is determined by laying out the geometry of the linkage for the range of wheel movement.
