490,481. Electric heating ; automatic regulation. OSBORN, H. J., and OSBORN & SHARP, Ltd., H. J. Aug. 6, 1937, Nos. 21692 and 26338. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A self-regulating electric heater comprises a wire element with a positive temperature coefficient and a wire control resistance with a higher positive temperature coefficient, the disposition and relative resistance of the two being such that heat flows from the heating element to the control resistance whereby the resistance of the latter is increased and the current flow to the heating element is decreased. In an iron, Fig. 3, the heating element is a wire a of a material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Nichrome " and is in series with control resistance wires b, b<1> of commercially pure nickel. The wires are wound on and arranged between mica sheets. The heating element and the control resistances are separated by an asbestos sheet h, and a steel plate i. A metal strap k extends over the control resistances. In a modification a single adjustable control resistance is employed. In a stove or furnace, the heating element is in the secondary circuit of a transformer and the control resistance is arranged in the wall or interior of the furnace in the primary circuit.
