Abstract

490,216. Ironing-presses. CHERRY TREE MACHINE CO., Ltd., and DOWELL, G. Feb. 9, 1937, Nos. 3782 and 29915. [Class 138 (ii)] In an ironing-press which is closed in two stages by fluid-pressure motors 26, 32, the motor 32 applying the heavy pressure is connected to the arm 15b, which forms the connection between the initial motor 26 and the press-closing toggles 15a, 16, through a cam lever 28 and follower 23 so as to act with a substantial mechanical advantage on the arm 15b to actuate the toggles further. One arm of the bell-crank lever 15 is linked to an arm operating an oil dashpot for cushioning the ends of the press closing and opening movements and the press is provided with a regulating device for compensating for the wear of the padding, the operation of this device being generally similar to that of the regulating device described in Specification 426,075, the arm 18 depending from the eccentric 17 at the toggle-joint being engaged by a cam portion of a bell-crank lever 20 of which one arm is connected to a screw. The screw may be rotated either manually by a nut or automatically by the movement of the lever 15 acting through a pawl and ratchet mechanism 37, 38. The buck is mounted so as to be able to rock slightly both longitudinally and transversely. The two cylinders 26, 32 may be energized simultaneously by the operation of a common fluid-pressure admission valve but preferably an admission valve is provided for the initial cylinder only, the fluid pressure passing to the cylinder 32 from the cylinder 26 when a port 26a, Fig. 6, in the latter is uncovered by the piston working therein. The Provisional Specification also refers to Specification 452,321.
