489,949. Collapsable guards. MORLEY, R. E. Feb. 5, 1937, No. 3405. [Class 45] A collapsable guard or grille comprises a folding lattice and picket structure with horizontal pickets a and balancing members such as spring drums c with cables f for supporting the weight of the moving parts. The lattice members are arranged to cause simultaneous movement of all the pickets. The cables pass between the channel members constituting the pickets. The ends of the pickets are guided in channel members e at each side. The separate spring counterbalance units may be replaced by a single shaft carrying pulleys, so that the lowermost picket would be constrained to maintain a horizontal position, or the cords might be taken over pulleys to wind on a common drum. Some of the intermediate pickets may be supported by the counter-balancing members actuated at proportional rates of movement. In the form shown in Fig. 6, a weight i is carried by a cord j on a drum k on a shaft l with dual stepped pulleys m taking cords /, f<1>. The lower picket may be secured in the upper or lower position by bolts.
