[Class 55 (i)] In a downdraught gasproducer provided with an axially adjustable air inlet pipe 2 so as to vary the position of the combustion zone 6 relatively to the grate 3 to suit the requirements of different fuels, the reducing zone 7 is constructed of greater crosssectional area than that of the combustion zone to reduce the velocity of the combustion gases. The lower part of the producer preferably takes the form of a frustum of a cone and is charged with charcoal or coke to remove tar and soot in the gases generated. The base of the inlet pipe 2 is provided with a cowl 8 which enables a well 9 to be formed between the base of the pipe and the combustion zone. Volatile products from the superincumbent fuel flow through apertures 10 in the cowl for combustion in the fuel bed of the producer. The producer may be started by connecting the gas withdrawal pipe 4 to suction and supplying charcoal and cotton-wool soaked in petrol to the fuel bed through the air inlet pipe. The charge above the charcoal or coke may comprise bituminous fuel such as brown coal briquettes.
