Abstract

488,368. Knitting. WILDT, E., HOLMES, H. H., HURD. J. C. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd. Jan. 5, 1937, Nos. 302 and 31143. [Class 74 (ii)] A circular knitting-machine of the double axially opposed needle cylinder type has means for shogging one or both of the cylinders in relation to the other and means whereby the needles in one or both of the cvlinders can be diverted to a non- knitting, e.g. a welt position, before shogging is effected. The invention is shown applied to a machine having superposed cylinders equipped with double-ended transferable needles. In one construction the rib cylinder 1 is driven from the plain cylinder 2 via a pinion 13 loose on shaft 10 and a pinion 15 secured to shaft 10. A driving connection between pinion 13 and shaft 10 is formed by flanges 42 adjustably secured to the underside of the pinion 13 and enclosing a pillar 27 extending from the upper flange 25 of a reel 18 slidably keyed to shaft 10 and supported thereon by a collar 46. Opposed screws 29 extending through the flanges 42 abut stepped surfaces 28 on the pillar 27. When the reel 18 is raised, it, and through it the shaft 10 and cylinder 1,' is shogged in relation to the pinion 13 and cylinder 2. The reel is positively raised and lowered by rollers 22, 23, which coact with cam surfaces 20, 21 on the reel 18, the rollers being carried on a sliding bar 24 controlled via a pivoted lever 35 and link 37 operated by controlling means (not shown). In another construction (not shown), the pinion 13 is rigidly secured to the shaft 10 and the pinion 15 is free on the hub of a wheel fast on the upper end of shaft 10 ; the pinion 15 has spaced lugs carrying opposed screws and a profiled cam bar slides endwise between the screws in a diametrical groove in the wheel ; and the pinion 15 meshes a spur gear or with teeth on the top cylinder. Immediately before the shogging takes place, welt cams (not shown), which may be of the spring-controlled radially movable bolt type and which normally preclude access to the welt track in both cylinders, are withdrawn to admit the knitting butts of needle-operating sliders to the welt tracks. The welt cams may be controlled from the unit which controls the bar 24. The yarn supply may be temporarily interrupted or cut off when shogging takes place. Some or all of the sinkers or web holders, if used, may be formed and /or operated to provide clearance between them and the needles in the opposite cylinder to enable shogging to take place. The extent of shogging may be, e.g. with a 1 : 1 rib arrangement, twice the distance between two tricks, or, where additional tricks are provided between the ordinary tricks, 1¢ times the said distance. Fig. 9 shows a 1 : 1 rib fabric having shog effects in which the upper cylinder has been racked a distance equal to the distance between two adjacent needles ; the fabric has retracted to the form shown. Fig. 11 shows a 1 : 1 rib fabric having a two-needle.distance shog effect before retraction. Specifications 15008/00, [Class 74], 24290/12, [Class 74 (ii)], and 391,212 are referred to.
