Abstract
478,798. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 2, 1937, No. 18432. Convention date, July 2, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] A gas- or vapour-electric arc discharge device, having an envelope containing an anode D, an incandescent cathode B and an intervening control grid C arranged so as substantially to screen the discharge path against charges upon the envelope wall, is provided with an auxiliarv electrode in the form of a metallic band or strip E, which serves to screen the discharge path and control grid against external influences, being mounted externally upon the wall of the envelope in the neighbourhood of the anode and having a potential applied thereto, such as by connecting it with one of the main electrodes of the device. The potential, which may be applied to the electrode E through a resistance, inductance or capacity, may be fixed, periodically variable, or adjustable, and the electrode E may take the form of a sheet-iron strip or a sprayed coating of limited width.
